If autodesk is real evil, they are destroying the whole landscape of video editing by only making it impossible for people to make movies to publish their work, or otherwise get clips from youtube. Those that are not willing to pay for the software get shafted and need to take a giant step back. I suggest everyone who cares to understand the software and licensing understand this issue. At this time, Autodesk has not used legal recourse to audit university students and government agencies. Also, vendors such as Autodesk are well known for reserving their right to audit – if a company gets caught using unauthorized software, Autodesk can sue. Using this private mode, in-house IT groups can carry out audits without subjecting their companies to risk of criminal prosecution. Many vendors such as Autodesk offer local representatives who can answer legal questions in addition to software purchasing questions. While legal software such as Autodesk requires an annual renewal, you can purchase software for an academic or government entity by contacting the vendor directly. The Autodesk Community is an excellent resource for finding more information for a student user: If you are a government agency, you can get a discount of around 30 percent of the retail price. If you are licensed for an educational institution, you can purchase an annual license from the CCC office for US $50/year. At the Law School, for instance, students can buy a 14 month license of Maya 2009 for $89 on line. If you are a student in need of a limited license, you can get it from your professors at a discounted rate.
